What Are Guardian Homes?

At Blissful Paws Pomskies, it’s important to us that the dogs in our program live happy, healthy lives as cherished family members. To make that possible, we carefully limit how many dogs we personally keep in our home. At the same time, continuing to improve our program requires adding exceptional bloodlines and evaluating promising dogs as they grow.

For us and many responsible breeders the way to do this the right way is through a Guardian Home Program. This allows our program to grow while ensuring our dogs never live in kennel-style environments. Instead, they enjoy normal, loving family lives, with all the attention and stability they deserve. We mainly place females in Guardian Homes, with the occasional male when it’s the right fit.

We also view our Guardian Home Program as a true win-win. Guardian Families receive a “pick of the litter,” top-quality puppy free of charge in return for partnering with Blissful Paws during the dog’s breeding years. And we have the peace of mind knowing that our dogs are living exactly the kind of life they deserve a full, enriched family life beyond just being part of a breeding program.

To protect our dogs and ensure their safety, we do have firm but caring rules in place. Guardians may not leave the dog with family members, keep them at home to be “checked on,” or use outside boarding facilities. Instead, whenever a family goes on vacation or needs help, the dog returns to us. Boarding is always free, and this allows us to make sure there are no accidental breedings, that the dog receives proper care, and that everything remains consistent and safe.

Our Guardian Families are incredibly important to us, and we deeply value the love and dedication they give to our dogs. This program makes it possible for our dogs to experience the best of both worlds being beloved family pets while also helping preserve and improve the quality of our lines.

Requirements to Qualify as a Guardian Home

To be considered for our Guardian Home Program, families must:

  • Live within 35 minutes of Trenton, Texas (75490) and be flexible with drop-offs and pick-ups for vet care, health testing, breeding, and whelping.
  • Keep the dog as an indoor pet only.
  • Provide a crate for safe confinement when unsupervised.
  • Have a fully fenced yard, or be willing to supervise the dog outdoors on leash at all times.
  • Use an approved veterinarian for routine pet care.
Blissful Paws pays for all health testing and breeding-related vet expenses; Guardians cover standard pet expenses such as wellness visits, vaccinations, preventatives, grooming, and training.
  • Have no other intact dogs in the home.
  • Provide basic training, including house training, leash training, crate training, and basic obedience.
  • Maintain monthly grooming with a professional groomer.
  • Feed our recommended diet and monthly preventatives.
  • Own your home and have no plans to relocate within the next 5 years.
  • Be comfortable sharing photos and videos of the dog for social media; we also cover the cost of professional photo sessions.
  • Understand that the purchase price of the dog is waived in exchange for consistent communication, cooperation, and commitment throughout the dog’s breeding career.

How the Guardian Program Works

Breeding, Testing, and Home Expectations

Once a dog completes and passes all required health testing:

  • We determine when and who they are bred to.
  • Females remain with their Guardian Families for pregnancy, then return to us around one week before their due date.
  • They whelp and raise their puppies with us.
  • Guardians may pick up their female once puppies are fully weaned, typically around 6–8 weeks.
  • Most females complete up to four litters depending on their health and overall well-being.
  • When their breeding career is finished, Blissful Paws covers the spay surgery through our trusted vet in Bryan County and then officially transfers full ownership to the Guardian Family.

Males in the Guardian Program

Males have longer contracts and are used on an as-needed basis. Guardians of males must:

  • Keep the male safely contained.
  • Ensure he never has access to intact females outside our program.
  • Communicate scheduling when he is needed for breeding.

Responsibilities of Guardian Families

For Female Dogs

Guardians must:

  • Understand heat cycle timing and signs.
  • Keep the female safely away from intact males.
  • Communicate immediately when a heat cycle begins.
  • Be prepared to be without their dog for 2–3 months during each litter.
  • Follow all safety guidelines to prevent accidental breedings.

For Male Dogs

Guardians must:

  • Keep the male properly secured and supervised.
  • Prevent him from coming into contact with intact females.
  • Bring him to us when needed for breedings.

Why We Love Our Guardian Homes

This program allows us to:

  • Maintain a small, well-loved group of personal dogs.
  • Continue improving the quality, health, structure, and temperament of our Pomskies.
  • Ensure every breeding dog lives a full and enriched life as a family pet.
  • Build long-term, meaningful partnerships with Guardian Families who truly care.

Guardian Homes allow our dogs to have the very best: the loving companionship of a permanent family, plus the opportunity to contribute to the future of the breed.
